Relocating dangerous chemical for Natural Resources Wales

The Situation

Natural Resources Wales is a Welsh Government sponsored body, which became operational from 1 April 2013, when it took over the management of the natural resources of Wales.

It was formed from a merger of the Countryside Council for Wales, Environment Agency Wales, and the Forestry Commission Wales, and also assumed some other roles formerly performed by the Welsh Government.

Johnson’s was appointed to facilitate the relocation of its Llanelli Laboratory to a new purpose built site in Swansea in 2017.

Due to the nature of the department’s work, assets to be relocated included dangerous chemicals, cold chain materials, and general lab consumables.

As well as moving complex, hazardous materials, other critical success factors included:

  • Preventing unauthorised access to the site throughout the period of the contract.
  • Prevent any interruption of the services supplies to the surrounding building at any time throughout the period of the contract.
  • Preventing any disturbance or interruption to the normal operations of the existing buildings in use at any time throughout the period of the contract.
  • Ensuring that all components required for the project were delivered to and installed within the project.
The Solution

Our seamless project management solution encompassed:

  • Move management;
  • Multi-phase relocation between buildings;
  • Chemical, instrument, and equipment relocation;
  • Pre and post move assistance;
  • Provision of crate hire;
  • Furniture and IT equipment relocation;
  • IT decommission and recommission.
The Outcome

We completed the project within the required time frame, with as little disruption to the workforce as possible.

The post-move team was on site to complete any snags during the workforce’s first day back in, but were met with little issues.

Client Quote

A spokesperson from Natural Resources Wales said:

“This was an extremely challenging project due to the complex nature of many of the assets which required relocation, and the potential disruption which could be caused to day-to-day operation.”
“Johnsons managed the entire project in a seamless, effective way and we were extremely pleased with the outcome.”
