Managing the relocation of over 6,000 different chemicals

The Situation

The University of Hertfordshire’s New Science Building houses new laboratories and teaching and is a key element of the university’s 2020 Vision.

A need was identified to move specialist equipment from the university’s existing science facilities to the new state-of-the-art building.

The project involved several potential hazards as over 6,000 different chemicals had to be moved. Furthermore, there was the high value, and sheer volume, of specialist laboratory apparatus which needed relocating.

The Solution

We split the project into two phases; phase one relocating approximately 35% of all items and the remaining 65% in phase two. We provided seven days of pre-planning to ensure everyone knew their responsibilities.

Due to the hazardous nature of the project, we worked closely with the university to create a Risk register which was closely monitored by our Project Move Manager, QHSE Manager, and representatives from the university. This ensured all work was carried out in accordance with agreed methods.

We deployed a fully-qualified Chemical Technician and ADR-qualified drivers to move over 6,000 different chemicals in five days – making it one of the biggest chemical relocations we’ve ever undertaken.

The project also encompassed:

• 2 days’ post-move assistance for each phase;
• Crate hire including coloured labels to identify where items should be placed;
• Cages for larger items;
• IT crates for small desk top laboratory and IT equipment;
• Safe protection, packing, transfer and unpacking of all specialist items;
• Dedicated packing team for lab and office effects.

The Outcome

Successful communication between ourselves, the University and additional on-site contractors (electricians, gas engineers and specialist equipment engineers) ensured the project took place in accordance with the specification and all safety requirements.
